Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) is increasingly used in biology and the appearance of imaging and structural and/or metabolic spectroscopy (MRI/MSR) platforms (Rennes, Strasbourg, Marseille...) devoted to this small animal shows the recent keen interest in these research techniques. However, to this day and to our knowledge, no approach of this style has been developed for sea molluscs and even less so for the cup oyster, Crassostrea gigas. Because of its economic importance, this bivalve mollusc is the subject of much research in physiology, to the point of becoming, at IFREMER, a biological model for marine invertebrates. Nonetheless, most of the methodologies developed for studying it are destructive, which (1) prevents individual follow-up, (2)... |

Since 1980, the IFREMER research laboratory "Resources Aquacoles", Sete (France), follows during the summer period, the evolution of the commercial stocks of molluscs (mussels and oysters) reared in Thau Lagoon. The data for this estimation are collected, on one hand, by surface observations and, on the other hand, by diving observations. During the years 1980 to 1984, the authors noticed an increase of oyster biomass, during the same period the mussel biomass decreased. The different simulations used to know the total filtration and the biodeposit, have shown that the impact of the increase of the total biomass is not so important as it could be feared. |

Bivalve molluscs possess several types of hemolymph cells (hemocytes), involved in internal defense and other physiological functions. Studies in pathological and experimental conditions have shown their micro- and macrophagic ability. However, the mechanisms of intracellular digestion are incompletely known in these organisms. The lysosomal apparatus of hemocytes was therefore investigated in several species by hydrolase localization with the electron microscope. The cytoplasmic granules of granulocytes displayed a strong acid beta -glycerophosphatase activity. Previous observations had shown that these granules may contain phagocytized material. This indicates that intracellular digestion is achieved in these organelles. Acid beta -glycerophosphatase... |

The mytilid bivalve Fungiacava eilatensis Goreau, Goreau, Neumann & Yonge, 1968, previously mistakenly referred to as F. eilatensis Soot-Ryen, 1969, is reported for the first time from Indonesia. It lives as an obligate endosymbiont of mushroom corals, particulary Fungia spp., reef-dwelling corals restricted to the tropical Indo-Pacific. Notes are given on its association with different host species, its habitat, its biogeography, and its possible competition with endosymbiotic gastropods belonging to the genus Leptoconchus (Coralliophilidae). |

Abstract: The reef ecosystems of Morro de São Paulo are located in the Tinharé-Boipeba Environmental Preservation Area which was established in 1992 in the state of Bahia, Brazil. Despite this area has been created more than two decades ago, no study has provided knowledge on the invertebrate biodiversity associated with such reef ecosystems. The present investigation provides the first inventory of benthic mollusks associated with the reef ecosystems of Morro de São Paulo based on the collection of living specimens and fresh empty as well as some worn shells. Mollusks were sampled in January 2015 and August 2016 through intensive searches from the intertidal to shallow subtidal habitats of the reefs on three beaches of Morro de São Paulo. Taxonomic... |

A polyclonal rabbit anti-human lysozyme (Dako) was applied on histological sections from bivalve mollusc and revealed with a mouse anti-rabbit IgG fluorescein conjugated antibody to localise cellular lysozyme in tissues where its activity had previously detected by enzymatic techniques. Labelling occurred in the cytoplasm of epithelial cells covering the body. This is in agreement with the intracellular distribution of this enzyme. In the Lucinid Lucinella divaricata gills, the cytoplasm of bacteriocytes was also labelled. This suggests that antibacterial activity occurred in these cells. Control sections indicate that fluorescence was a consequence of true primary antibody fixation. However, its specificity should be verified by electrophoretical... |

Several gastropods, including members of the Busyconinae, wedge or chip bivalve prey by inserting the outer lip between the valves. This habit, which is associated with an abapically downwardly convex outer lip, often results in breakage and subsequent repair of the lip. I tested the hypothesis that convex-lipped clavilithines from the Eocene of France and the Neogene of Indonesia had higher frequencies of repair than their straight-lipped counterparts. Although this prediction was verified, frequencies of repair are low (0 to 0.19) compared to those of busyconines, indicating either that prey bivalves were small or that the predators are smaller than most busyconines. |

Abstract The Guandu River Basin is extremely important to state of Rio de Janeiro, as a water supplier of several municipalities. However, the malacological knowledge and environmental status is not well known to this basin. The aim of this paper is to present an inventory of freshwater mollusks, as well as an environmental assessment through a Rapid Assessment Protocol, of ten sampling sites at Guandu River basin in six municipalities (Piraí, Paracambi, Japeri, Seropédica, Queimados and Nova Iguaçu). Thirteen species of molusks were found, eight native (Pomacea maculata, Biomphalaria tenagophila, Gundlachia ticaga, Gundlachia radiata, Omalonyx matheroni, Diplodon ellipticus, Anodontites trapesialis and Eupera bahiensis) and five exotics (Melanoides... |

Abstract Unionida is the most diverse clade of freshwater bivalves. Among the groups occurring in South America, one with the highest number of species is Rhipidodontini (Hyriidae, Unionida, Paleoheterodonta, Bivalvia). However several issues remains on taxonomy and systematic of this group, leading to problems on species identification, description, as also as a limiting factor to other type of studies (e.g., ecology, conservation,…). In this paper is presented a synthesis of available knowledge about Diplodon Spix in Wagner, 1827 and Rhipidodonta Mörch, 1853 in South America, as a first step in order to a better understating of Rhipidodontini. The evaluation of different authors exposes the little agreement between them that resulted in a sort of... |

This article describes the requirements of the Manual of Operations, Part 2 of the National Shellfish Sanitation Program, for conducting verification studies at depuration plants for molluscan shellfish. This article also describes the effect of the Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCPs) on such studies, and how to plan studies on new or existing plants. Methods are described for analyzing the various facets of the physical plant, such as sea water systems, tank construction, and other pertinent facilities. Of equal importance, methods are described for investigating and analyzing the various critical control points of the operation of the plant. Studies at a soft clam depuration plant are used as a model for this article. The most important... |

Since 1991, high mortality rates of larvae and juveniles of different bivalve mollusc species associated with herpesvirus infections have been reported in different countries. The aim of this study was to determine if more than one helpesvirus species was responsible for these infections or just one species exhibiting polymorphism. The investigations concentrated on the analysis of the virus genome, studies of virus transmission in different mollusc species and on the potential role of bivalve adults in the occurrence of infections. The analysis of various target sequences within the virus genome present in infected larvae samples demonstrated the presence of polymorphism. More notably a variant of the virus was identified and the variation appears... |

In European waters, significant economic damages to wooden structures are caused by bivalves molluscs and crustaceans. Treatments like copper-chrome-arsenic mixtures (CCA) were designed to prevent settlement of these wood borer species. However, limited and conflicting evidence regarding the toxicity to non-target organisms are available in the literature. This report aims to provide insights regarding the CCA leachates' toxicity to an important aquaculture species, the blue mussel Mytilus edulis for which much information on normal and stressed physiology is available for purposes of comparisons. The mussels are usually considered as a particularly suitable species for biological monitoring (Smaal and Widdows, 1994). To address the CCA leachate issue, two... |

The French network for the surveillance and monitoring of mollusc health (REPAMO) was officially set up in 1992 to control the shellfish status along the French coasts according to the European directives 91/67/EEC and 95/70/EC. The objectives are 1) the surveillance of notifiable diseases present in France (Bonamiosis and Marteiliosis of flat oysters Ostrea edulis), 2) the surveillance of health status of cultured and wild populations of molluscs, 3) the study of abnormal mortality and 4) the control of exchanges from European and third countries. In this context, a new surveillance programme, called Active Targeted Survey, part of the REPAMO, was applied in 2004 in order to improve the monitoring of the health status of the French mollusc populations... |
